On this Red Baron CD tenor-saxophonist David Murray allegedly pays homage to six saxophonists (Lester Young, Sonny Rollins, Charlie Parker, Charlie Rouse, Sonny Stitt and John Coltrane) but much of the time he does not even seem to realize who he is paying tribute to. Not only does Murray not imitate or emulate his predecessors, he often ignores the outlines of the songs themselves. On "Lester Leaps In" his ferocious solo (with its sudden upper-register outbursts) is unintentionally humorous. He is a bit more involved with Thelonious Monk's "Bright Ississippi" and "Broadway" but on the only ballad of the day "Central Park West," Murray's solo gets downright silly during its second half, ruining the peaceful meditative mood of the song with some self-indulgent upper-register ramblings. The rhythm section (pianst John Hicks, bassist Ray Drummond and drummer Andrew Cyrille) largely ignores the tenor's improvisations, making this one of David Murray's more forgettable recordings. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi
