Book has little to do with ââ?¬Å"Saving Stalinââ?¬Â?. The 330 pages of text rarely hints at the reason, scope, and importance of US and British aid to the Soviet Union/Stalin. More verbiage is given to the fear of Stalin of agreeing to a separate peace with Germany and Soviet military offensives to aid D-Day/Battle of the Bulge leading one to wonder who was saving who. Many pages devoted to battles but are riddled with inaccuracies (Heinkle dive bombers, Panther tanks being in Modelââ?¬â?¢s Army at Kursk, Manstein destroying four Soviet ââ?¬Å"deceptionââ?¬Â? Corps) perhaps because he uses references that have become dated (Bullock 1991, Erickson 1975, Werth 1964; Clark 1985) good books at the time but surpassed by new scholarship in many ways. Also examples of battlefield heroics which do not seem to have relevance to the subject matter. Of particular curiosity is the description of Stalins deportation of the Caucasus people which while a cost of war has little connection with the rest of the book other than perhaps to link it with Jackson & the Trail of Tears. Could of used an editor who would of picked up the glaring grammar errors which perhaps ran afoul of someoneââ?¬â?¢s spell check program. Finally came away with little new knowledge or understanding of the relations between the Allies which should of been the point of this inappropriate titled book.
