Saving Myles� by Carl Vonderau is a well-crafted suspense novel that pulls readers into a heart-pounding adventure. Wade and Fiona are Myles� parents. They divorced because of a decision that was made to send Myles away to a rehab center for youth. It doesn�t take long for Myles to regress back into his old behavior. Unfortunately, he finds trouble in Mexico while there to do a drug deal. He gets kidnapped by the cartel and his parents are asked to pay a hefty ransom. His parents will do anything to get him home. To do so, they make a deal that ends up forcing them to work for the cartel. Myle�s father will do anything to get his son safe and save his family, but he also is ready to do what he must to take down the people that are after his family.
ââ?¬Å"Saving Myles,ââ?¬Â? really kept me hanging on the edge of my seat! I got wrapped up in the family and found myself rooting for them to prevail. Vonderau has a gift for creating multi-dimensional characters that are authentic. Despite Mylesââ?¬â?¢ flaws, he is still a sympathetic protagonist. His parents seem like everyday people until they are put in this situation. The father finds strength in his character that he was previously unaware. The supporting cast adds complexity to the story, especially because we are trying to figure which side, they are on. Vanderau takes us into the gritty underworld of the Mexican cartel. He does an excellent job of creating atmospheric descriptions, in the dark side of Tijuana, that vividly create a feeling of dread and urgency. I loved that he seamlessly threads moments of quiet introspection into the fast-paced action. I get to experience the desperate thoughts of Myles and his parents while they are trying to resolve not only this issue, but the huge issue of the family being broken. The emotional aspects of the story add a whole other layer of complexity that makes it even more compelling and difficult to put down.
Living in California, on the Mexican border, I enjoyed reading about an area in which I am familiar. The issues with the cartel are also very familiar to me as I knew a family who was embroiled in a similar situation. The crime organization in which they had to deal with also had a lot of people who were forced into working for them, especially family members. It was interesting to see this aspect included in a fictional narrative.
Fans of fast-paced suspense must read ââ?¬Å"Saving Myles.ââ?¬Â? It would also be an excellent choice for a readerââ?¬â?¢s group. Interesting discussions are sure to follow.
