Seller's Description:
Small 4to. Purple cloth with silver lettering, pictorial dust jacket. 260pp. Frontispiece, numerous full-page plates. Very good/good plus. Jacket quite edgeworn and rubbed, with numerous discreet and archivally strengthened (on verso) separations, but Brodart-encased, complete and fairly attractive; endpapers rather age toned. Tight and attractive copy of this large biography of the troubled French sculptor and artist Henri Gaudier (1891-1915) killed in World War One and his muse and inspiration, Polish writer Sophie Brzeska (1873-1925). Literary Guild editions are reprint editions a la Book-of-the-Month Club, but since they claim to have been released on the same day as the regular trade edition and the only regular trade edition of this was published in London (by William Heinemann), this is one Literary Guild that can legitimately be termed the first U.S. edition.
