I first picked this book up in my teens, and I must admit I struggled with it back then. Several years on and the sheer length of the novel (1350 pages) was still intimidating at first, but within the first few pages I was hooked all over again. Edward Rutherford's mix of historical fact, imagination, and excellent storytelling make what could have been a very long history lesson into a really good read from start to finish. Each chapter brings in a new set of characters through the ages, but with links to their ancestors from previous chapters. There were many occasions throughout the book when I found myself nodding in recognition as historical facts were uncovered that I'd heard about but never really looked into the details of. I would recommend this book to anyone with a reasonable amount of time on their hands for reading as it really is very long - but totally worth it.
