In the street, two motorcycles stop, two men dismount and assassinate an official. Evans tries to continue his leisurely expat life, but must deal with the aftermath of murder. He gets help from his friends. Arturo, the city engineer, gives inside information. Efraim, the worldly taxi driver, who has returned with his wife after many years in el Norte, explains street life. Senora Concepcion, Robert's older landlady, gives shelter with her family but asks help finding a missing young woman. Randy, his activist daughter, is a no-nonsense problem solver and sometimes conscience. The expat community gives advice, hugs and an evening mescal or two. Robert works his way through the foods of Oaxaca and discovers a body, a river of dead fish, and a gold mine.
