Featuring some of the bigger hits in Italy from 2000/2001, Sanremo 2001 is a mixed bag of popular songs from Europe. Most of the songs are Italian, from Elisa's trip-hop track "Luce (Tramonti a Nord Est)" to the energetic hip-hop of Carlotta's "Promessa." This collection reflects the similarities that most Western pop music shares, showing how language may be the only barrier between fans of this sort of music. There are sappy teen pop ballads (Jenny B's "Anche Tu"), sappy pop/rock ballads (Velvet's "Nascosto Dietro un Vetro"), pseudo-trip-hop (Elisa's "Luce (Tramonti a Nord Est)"), there's even a Destiny's Child-style R&B track (Carlotta's "Promessa"). Only the sleazy, Mr. Bungle-esque ramblings of Quintorigo offer a true alternative to the typical mainstream pop genres featured here. The offerings from Shivaree, Moby, and Placebo are all great tracks that should have been bigger hits in their native countries, while the rest of the album is mostly pleasant filler that neither offends nor inspires. Fans of mainstream pop who are feeling adventurous may want to give this a listen, but be warned that this is a mixed bag that is not ashamed to genre-hop from track to track. ~ Bradley Torreano, Rovi
