Sancocho is a dish found all over Latin America, consisting of a mix of various vegetables, spices, and meats, creating a delicious "stew." Sol y Canto's debut album for the Rounder label is aptly named after this Latino culinary delight. From boldly played son ("Tierra," "Sol y Agua"), to stirring son jarocho ("El Cascabel"), to vallenato that rocks like the ocean ("Nacio Mi Poesia"), Sancocho combines ingredients that would seldom be found together elsewhere. And it is a rich dish, indeed. Under the direction of virtuosic guitarist Brian Amador, the ensemble grooves as comfortably in any one style as the other. The bell-like voice of wife and lead vocalist Rosi Amador brings a delicate and ethereal quality that while adapting to each new environment, makes each her own. The opportunity to hear the inventive soloing of saxophone/flute player Jon Weeks is a treat to the ears, as is the swinging groove of percussionist Renato Thoms. Sancocho, a beautiful tapestry of acoustic sound, makes for a very comfortable listen, and certainly a strong first impression for this ambitious group of musicians. While each composition adopts a new style, and a new corner Latin American world as its own, all are undeniably Sol y Canto. ~ Evan C. Gutierrez, Rovi
