The album remains an interesting collection of small-group music from the tribal areas of North Yemen. Samar is the name for the time in the evening when friends gather to drink coffee, chew the narcotic, quat, and play music -- with the exception of the last track, a wedding song, this collection represents the music of Samar, featuring the oudh, male vocalists and various drums. The music is largely hopeful and upbeat, with lyrics that combine religious influences with tales of passion and lovesickness that echo the beauty of Arabic devotional poetry.
