The refinement of the orchestration is close to perfection, and all the score's details are brought out. Even so, there is a lack of excitement in the playing in the first part, as if that day's recording session was uninspired. The orchestra doesn't catch fire until the second part, presumably recorded on the following day. The addition of pianists Leo Litwin and Bernard Zighera might have stimulated the ensemble to a higher level of involvement. In contrast, the performance of Francis Poulenc's Concerto for organ, strings, and tympani is consistently energetic and vibrant, with Boston's strings sounding almost ecstatic.
