This is a perfectly lovely disc of French Romantic virtuoso pieces for violin orchestra played with extraordinary sympathy and virtuosity by Augustin Dumay. Even with competition from just about every first-rank violinist since Ysa˙e, Dumay more than holds his own with the best players in terms of tone and technique, and he surpasses most of the best players in terms of taste and interpretations. Dumay's Saint-Saëns showpieces sound like works with infectious melodies rather than overblown virtuosities, and his Fauré Berceuse is simply, supremely lyrical. And one can only regret that there is no more of Lalo's Symphonie espagnole than Dumay's stunning performance of its Intermezzo. Listeners who already own several recordings of these works may not feel the need to acquire another, but listeners who do not already know these warm and lovely works will be charmed by Dumay's elegant and expressive performances. EMI's remastered sound is more than acceptable but less than impressive. ~ James Leonard, Rovi
