The Violin Sonata No. 1 in D minor, Op. 75, is alluded to in Proust's novel Swann's Way , and violinist Renaud Capuçon and pianist Bertrand Chamayou perfectly balance their instruments in passages where the piano soars above the violin like an unrealized dream. The Cello Sonata No. 1 in C minor, Op. 32, is as close as Saint-Saëns comes to downbeat, and Edgar Moreau handles the low, growling cello part with clear definition. Perhaps the most interesting work of the three is the Piano Trio No. 2 in E minor, Op. 92, which has the five-movement arch shape later favored by Bartók and others.
