This obscure work of Twain?s was his very favorite. After years of lengthy research, including a perusal of the actual records of Joan?s trial, Twain composed this accurate fictional portrayal of one of the greatest women of all time. Though not Catholic himself, Twain reveals a deep personal respect for this saint as he draws out her unique tale. An untaught shepherdess, Joan of Arc heard the voices of St. Margaret, St. Catherine, and St. Michael, calling her to lead the armies of France against the English and crown Charles king of France. After overcoming people?s utter disbelief in her seemingly impossible and absurd mission with several miracles, Joan accomplished her mission and turned the tide of the Hundred Years? War. In gratitude, she was betrayed into English hands and burnt at the stake as a witch. Twain enlivens her story with numerous interesting characters who follow her from her home to the wars. He also integrates native childhood customs and beliefs into the tale to give her story a mystical depth. This is the most personable account of Joan of Arc that can be found. While fictional, the abundance of research Twain put into the facts gives one the confidence that not only are most of the events narrated true, but even Joan?s character and personality have been accurately gleaned from the records by one of the best American authors.
