For some composers, their relative obscurity came with good reason, while others were unwilling victims of geography and the identity of their contemporaries. The latter was the case for Joseph de Bologne de Saint-George, a French composer living at a time when the Viennese had a dominant hand on musical Classicism. His predominant contemporaries included the likes of Mozart and Haydn. Fortunately for listeners, his rather prolific output is being rediscovered. On the present album, we hear volume three of five of Saint-George's complete violin concertos. These works are every bit as charming and elegant as the concertos of either Haydn or Mozart.
