The soaring and spacious but somewhat rough-hewn English pieces on Sacred Treasures of England, by the likes of Sheppard and Tye, fit the group's talents marvelously, and listeners wanting to start with the Schola Cantorum might choose that release. However, there's much to recommend in Sacred Treasures of Spain as well. The pristine High Renaissance polyphony of the Spanish Golden Age is a bigger stretch for the group, but its energy carries the day. The choir, by contemporary standards, is unusually large (57 singers), and the choristers have the muscle to power through Francisco Guerrero's difficult Regina caeli ŕ 8 and Tomás Luis de Victoria's Ave Maria ŕ 8.
