Famous today as Britain's premier special forces trait, the Special Air Service had its origins in a series of hazardous, and occasionally improbable, missions in World War II. Due to the involvement (and in some instances treachery) of foreign nationals in France, Greece, Yugoslavia and elsewhere, many SAS operations have remained classified. SAS paratroopers planned to land in France on D-Day to ambush advancing German columns in concert with French Resistance fighters. Captured SAS men faced certain death if local German commanders chose to obey Hitler's Commando Order calling for their summary execution. Such was to be the fate of several before this gallant but failed mission came to its end. Only 20 of the 55 SAS men involved in this operation survived. For 40 years unanswered questions have remained about possible French treachery and the exact fate of British servicemen missing in German-controlled territory. The files on Operation Bulbasket were only recently declassified and author Paul McCue's book is the first complete and totally candid account.
