A slight creak came again. Straining her eyes into the darkness, Ruth saw a faint streak of light along the edge of the door from the lamp burning in the hall outside. Someone, she knew, had opened the door and was listening now to make sure that she was asleep. Nor was there any doubt in her mind as to the identity of the visitor. With a quick movement Asa stepped inside and shut the door behind him. He carried a small burning candle which he placed in a holder on one side of the room, illumining it faintly. "Leave this room!" Ruth sat up, drawing the covers about her with one hand. Of necessity this left one lovely arm and shoulder bare, for she wore only a shift. Asa moved toward the couch confidently, as if sure of his welcome. "Have you no decency?" Ruth lashed out at him. "I am a guest in your house." He sat on the couch near her feet, and when she drew them up quickly, he only moved closer. "How beautiful you are," he said hoarsely. "The women of Judah are not like you." He reached out to touch her bare skin, but Ruth drew back quickly. He then lunged suddenly at her and gripped her shoulders, forcing her back on the couch. His thick lips touched her neck. Sick with revulsion, Ruth tried to shove him away, but he was stronger and kept pushing her back on the bed until in desperation she raked his face with her nails, drawing blood.
