This message of accountability, plus Perot's offbeat, incisive wit, made him a popular figure, who early on in the presidential race actually led the polls. His insistence on fiscal responsibility by reducing the national debt struck a chord with the public. Perot's influence caused the major party candidates to reassess their positions. Many people were shocked and disappointed when Perot suddenly withdrew from the race, stating that his continued presence might be disruptive. The quixotic Perot changed his mind again later, and re-entered the race, using his vast fortune to promote his campaign.
