I had accidently heard my mother speaking of selling her emerald necklace, and some valuable diamonds which had long been in the family. My heart beat, my cheeks flushed painfully, and though I did not shed a single tear, I felt sick and giddy from emotion. I went into my bedroom and fell on my knees. "Send them help, 0 Lord," I cried, now in sobs and tears; "relieve them from their distresses, and make me in some way useful to them. I am but as a little child, and I know not what to do." What a blessed thing it was that I bad laid hold of the strong consolation of prajer! All at once I remembered Rose's favourite text of comfort, and it came upon me as if Christ Himself were speaking to me. To this day I feel persuaded it was no common recollection, but an immediate message from God: "Call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me." I became comparatively calm, for the comfort of.prayer is inexpressible. I remember that night having indistinct and dreamy ideas of going out as a governess. I had read of girls who had become quite heroines in that capacity, and I am afraid my musings were not as sober and serious as they ought to have been on a matter of such importance. I gave the rein to my imagination, and drew a charming picture of my life as teacher and hireling; for it did not suit me in the mood I then was to think of the trials, sorrows, and temptations which must necessarily encompass a life like this.
