This terrific story is the continuation of (RITA Award winning) SUNFLOWER. Kase Storm, half-breed son of Analisa, is now an adult lawyer. Before this story begins, Kase has prodded and poked at his mother and step-father (Caleb Storm) to know more about his real father. When they admit that his mother was raped and lived with censure because she kept him, Kase is shattered by the news. He abruptly leaves his home in Boston and finds a job as marshal in a small town of Wyoming Territory.
When the story begins, Kase is stuck emotionally and doesn't know what to do about it. Little happens in the town and he has plenty of time to stew. One day, a small foreign woman (Rose Audi) appears, looking for her husband. Kase has the unenviable task of telling her that her husband was recently killed by a stray bullet. When she faints, he takes her to a boarding house, rents her a room for the night and buys her a train ticket to leave.
The next morning, however, Rose has no intention of leaving town. She finds the shop her husband planned to open his store and decides to begin a restaurant. The only thing that seemed unlikely is the fact that it immediately became a success ? in spite of the few residents.
When Kase realizes he is interested in Rose, he decides to go back to the Indian village where his father is likely to have come from and learn more. He's concerned because he has a hair-trigger temper, is hostile to prejudice and solves problems with his fists first. He worries that he may turn into a murderer too.
This book is hard to set aside; the writing is engaging and interesting. I hated to let go of SUNFLOWER so this continuation is a real treat. The next book in this series, COME SPRING, is about Kase's sister ? and also won a RITA Award. 4.5 stars
