Consider the Wind Quintet, Op. 79, by the almost totally forgotten August Klughardt (1847-1902), perhaps the last composer to earn a living as a court musician. He was a devotee of Wagner and Liszt, conducting the operas of the former, but continued to write in classical forms. The result in the Wind Quintet, Op. 79, is a curious hybrid, a piece of wind chamber music with unexpected dramatic qualities. Sample the finale, with its seemingly innocuous Adagio - Allegro molto vivace tempo marking. Rather than a typical slow introduction, Klughardt introduces the Allegro in stages, as if he were writing an operatic scene that gains energy. It's a wholly novel effect.
