Out of print for many years, James Karman's Robinson Jeffers, Poet of California has been revised and expanded for this new edition. Karman takes us into the mythic life of Jeffers and his family as they build their own house on a desolate, rocky point at Carmel-By-The-Sea, where they carved out a life that honored hard work, self-reliance and the environment.

Karman's book offers a short, insightful and useful biography of a fascinating American poet. Shorn of the reams of biographical details that many biographical tomes feature, this is a book that helps readers who may have little or only a passing familiarity with Jeffers' work the opportunity to appreciate his background, intellectual heritage, and influences - not least the interplay between his rich literary gifts and the beauty of the Central California coast. Before reading it, I found Jeffers' work difficult to get into. After reading it, his work is no less difficult, but surely more comprehensible. Karman has done a service for readers, illuminating a life and adding to understanding. He avoids hagiography, deals fairly with the poet's personal shortcomings, and delivers the goods quickly and clearly. The later material on the self-destructive tendencies of Jeffers' boho artist friends is worth the price of admission and would make a hilarious, if dark, comedy.
