It is 1821 and the vast territory we know today as the West is open for settlement. The Louisiana Purchase has created a vast empire ripe for settling, or for the taking. And Baron Torville wants it all for himself. But young Jean Talon sees this land as a place to begin and build a life for himself. Building up the country, settling a wild and potentially productive land is the theme of many of L'Amour's books, especially the Sackett series, and by the way the Talon family is relatives of the Sacketts. The one thing I am not fond of is, first person narrative which this books uses, but other than that this is an okay book, and well worth having and reading.
