The Sonic Dolls take the piss out of their own genre right at the beginning of their album, laying down a generic punk rock album dedication by using a robotic computer voice. The funniest bit is when the voice counts "1, 2, 3, 4" in a passionless tone before the energetic "Words of Love" blasts from the speakers. And so begins Riot at the Sheep Dog Trials, the first Sonic Dolls record on Stardumb Records to hit American shores. Known for being the torch-bearers of pop-punk when the European scene was dying in the mid-'90s, the Sonic Dolls take a very cynical view of punk rock in 2002. "Angry Dolls" is a perfect example, spouting anti-poseur lyrics with a venom rarely utilized by bands this poppy. But this is far more in tune with groups like Rancid or the Bouncing Souls anyway, offering sloppy and angry songs that forego the girl-crazy lyrics most of their contemporaries dwell on. Although nothing here is groundbreaking, its always nice to hear a dependable slab of traditional punk rock, and that's exactly what the Sonic Dolls have to offer. Whether it be 1979 or 2002, Riot at the Sheep Dog Trials stands tall as a filler-free punk album. ~ Bradley Torreano, Rovi
