In 1978, the first group of space shuttle astronauts was introduced to the world-twenty-nine men and six women who would carry NASA through the most tumultuous years of the space shuttle program. Among them was USAF Colonel Mike Mullane, who, in his memoir Riding Rockets, strips the heroic veneer from the astronaut corps and paints them as they are-human.

Bought this book for my young teenager, but wasn't aware of the apparent "adult" nature of some of its contents. The online descriptions do not reveal that part of it, but after reading inside the dust jacket and the Table of Contents, I decided not to let him read it. He has enjoyed several astronauts' autobiographies already and I thought this would be another safe one. If anyone has any in-depth criticism of my concerns, please share. Thanks!

Best Biography
What a wonderful book. His writing style is emminently readable, even for a lay person like me. Anecdotes that portray the emotion and laughter behind many of the everyday work situations of being an astronaut. Also introduces the reader to much of the mundane background involved in the world of space flight. I found him to be very open to make fun of himself, and able to invite the reader into the family life of an astronaut as well. This is book that I will definitely read more than once.
