The title for my review comes from the last chapter of the book, and pretty much sums up how the lead character in the book, Dan Bellew, takes life--one day at a time, and with a bit of pessimism. Most of Ernest Haycox's characters are people with this attitude, just as it seems many people are in real life, and that is his strength as a writer; to have people who are truly people each of us have met in life, or are reflections of ourself. This novel was a serial in a magazine, so Haycox had to write in the way the editors of the magazine dictated, although he did stretch the boundries he was restricted by as much as he could with each succeeding story he sold. Haycox felt these restrictions, yet bound by making a living, he accepted them and made the most of it. And, indeed he is the author who elevated the "western" out of the lowly place it had in literary circles. Riders West is the story of a range war between a town and the local ranchers against Neel St.Cloud and his desperadoes who want to have their own way. Added in is Nan Avery, an easterner come to escape her past, who obviously needs protection. This is typical western fare, but told as no one else could. I heartily endorse this book.
