On the bluffs near Point of Rocks is a seam of oyster shells 6 inches in thickness, of a species now extinct, about the size of our edible oyster today. The sandstone bluffs along the road here are eroded into fantastic shapes, some of which have been named "Cave of the Sand," "Hermit's Grotto," "Water-washed Caves of the Fairies," "Sancho's Bower." Salt Wells derives its name from the fact that the water of the well here has a salty taste. Rock Springs is the greatest coal mining town on the line of the Union Pacific Railway. The town was named after a saline spring of water which boils up at the foot of the bluff. From this point to Green River there is some excellent scenery. Just before entering the Green River station Green Eiver is crossed. The old adobe town, remains of which are still visible, was located on the bottom land directly in front of the gorge from which the train emerges. It is the Greeft River which, uniting with the Grande, forms the Colorado River, which flows through the famous Grand Canon of Arizona. The greenish tint of the river is not owing to a discoloration of the water, but the fact that it flows through a shale which contains copper, which becomes detached and fastens itself to the pebbles which line the bottom of the stream. Some three miles west of Green River is Fish Out, where has been found petrified fishes in abundance and a small bed containing fossil insects.
