Though it may not be marketed as such, Resurrection Man could actually be called the first of a trilogy, one that takes place in an alternate past where, shortly after World War II, magic is slowly beginning to creep back into the world. In Resurrection Man the advance of the magic is still relatively slow and small, but as the book progresses it becomes clear that this return of supernatural forces to the world is becoming so overwhelming that ignoring it is no longer an option. Presumably because Stewart was still exploring what he wanted this world to be like, the locales of this book do not suck you in as they do in the other two books. Still, Resurrection Man is a very enjoyable read and holds its own when compared to its more polished older siblings, the engaging Galveston and Stewart's masterpiece, The Night Watch.
