At this trial Burr was acquitted of the charges of treason arising from revelations of a conspiracy involving the western states passed to President Jefferson by General James Wilkinson who had been involved; Burr (1756-1836), Jefferson's vice-president, 1801-1805, had been dropped from the 1804 ticket and had killed Alexander Hamilton in a dual in 1805, moving west in an attempt to revive his fortunes, then, following the trial, to Europe for a period of four years, returning to New York for a somewhat quieter life before his death.
