First edition. 360pp. Original brown pebbled cloth, gilt-lettered spine. Index. Light wear to spine ends, else a fine copy. A comprehensive report covering mining and mineral resources throughout the country. The work was later expanded. Browne gives an extensive historical sketch of gold and silver mining on the Pacific Slope, with specifics on Marshall's discovery, the discovery of gold in print, excitement abroad, various methods of mining (pan, rocker, ditches, the "Tom, " sluice, etc. ), a gold-dredging machine, decrease of wages, quartz mining, the hydraulic process, decline of river mining, the Kern River excitement, the Tuolumne Table Mountain, Rushes to Australia, the Fraser Fever, discovery of the Comstock Lode, the Washoe excitement, Virginia City, the silver panic, etc., etc. He then covers the Mother Lode including mines, mining, and resources. The resources and mines of Nevada and the Comstock Lode is covered in some detail, as well as resources and mining in Oregon, Washington Territory, Utah, Montana, and Idaho and Arizona, including the copper resources and districts and the Quicksilver mines including the New Almaden Mine and its production; the discovery and manufacture of Borax; sulphur, tin and coal as well as mining laws and miner's regulations is discussed. Appended to Browne's report is a lengthy address by Edmund Randolph on the history of California from the discovery to the year 1849. The last section of this work is James W. Taylor's report on the mines east of the Rockies. This report and the expanded version of 1868 were the first in a series, later taken over by Rossiter W. Raymond.
