Contains a vocabulary of the Sioux languages. Howes USIANA A-379; Sabin 2335. Atwater (1778-1867), a successful Ohio lawyer, was appointed as U.S. commissioner to negotiate with the Indians of the upper Missouri for the pruchase of mineral-rich land; "a social and intellectual pioneer of the Middle West, and perhaps the first advocate of forest conservation; he was one of the first to predict the success of the railway, the first historian of his state and the founder of its school system" (DAB).
