Although electro-rock became a popular genre in the late '90s (Stabbing Westward, NIN, White Zombie, etc.), few artists maintained their '80s roots from bands like Skinny Puppy, Ministry, etc. Hate Dept. is one of the few contemporary rock bands to include elements of their industrial godfathers. On their EP Release It, seven tracks are featured, five being versions of the title track, as well as two compositions from their 1999 release Technical Difficulties. Hate Dept. prove to still be kings of the dance floor; "Heaven Trails" features pulsating beats and irresistible guitar riffs, while all five versions of the EP's title track are perfect for the club scene. The title track from Technical Difficulties is featured as well, a tranquil, futuristic number comparable to classic late-'70s/early-'80s Gary Numan (a sparse arrangement merged with a robotic voice).
