Ambos manuscritos contienen numerosas notas al margen, tachaduras y correcciones, lo que indica que son documentos de trabajo, no versiones finales.De las Casas afirma haber empezado a escribir su obra hacia 1527 pero s???lo la afront??? con fuerza en la segunda mitad de los 1540, cuando obtuvo acceso a la biblioteca privada de Hernando Col???n en Sevilla. A su muerte la obra qued??? inconclusa, en forma de manuscrito, y fue olvidada hasta su redescubrimiento en 1791. Pudo escribir su Diario hacia 1557. Para componer la Historia de las Indias, De las Casas utiliz??? tanto su extracto del Diario como el manuscrito de la Historia del Almirante de Hernando Col???n, que todav???a no hab???a sido publicada.
