This analysis shows how Margaret Thatcher and, after her, John Major have traded on popular disilllusionment with socialism and a deliberate falsification of what Keynes was saying to discredit the left-of-centre consensus in Britain today and impose an unjust economic and social system that has but one objective: to re-allocate wealth from the lower and middle income groups to the already wealthy, by making 90 per cent of people worse off. This has been done at the expense of the job security and welfare of the overwhelming majority. The New Right cannot succeed in its claimed goal of creating wealth for all in a competitive market economy, as it is neither interested in, nor relevant to, the concerns of economic and social justice. Yet many people have come to believe that because socialism has been discredited. the political philosophy of the New Right is the only possible option. While other writers have set out to demonstrate the failure of the New Right, the author goes further: he shows that since the Keynesian consensus did not fail, but was merely replaced by politicians with different priorities, there is an alternative. This can be found in the nature of government itself in a liberal democracy, in the consensus that already exists among voters, and in the example of those countries where different strategies are in place and working successfully. Liberal democracy, by definition, is concerned with the welfare of all. Among the population at large, there is a clear consensus in favour of established left-of-centre policies: the welfare state, government intervention in the economy, Keynesian demand management and so on. The consensus is within the range of traditional Labour policies, and any party offering an alternative to the New Right should take this on board. The evidence shows that this programme is proven to be effective in creating a socially and economically healthy society.
