This horribly realistic account of the last months of the russo-german war centers on the battle of Warsaw. You'll find all of the familiar Sven Hassel comrades: Porta, the legionnaire, Tiny, Heide, the Old Man, and Hassel himself, thrown into retreat. Hassel describes the day to day actions of he and his comrades as they fight, steal, drink, and gamble their way across Poland. Hassel himself has claimed that much of his books are based on his own as well as his comrades' own experiences which, even when fictionalized, paint an agonizing portrait of war, its effects on the population, and its pointlessness. This is a rare peak into the real German Army and its members who, though usually portrayed as mindless automatons fighting for a dictator they are prepared to die for, are actually normal people with ideas - and agendas - of their own.
