In reality this is less a compilation than a label sampler, showcasing artists whose albums were released by Mango this year. It's a pretty diverse group running from veteran singers to newer signings. Unfortunately this was not one of the label's stellar years; in truth, the real action was now in the dancehalls, but that rough and tumble world was anathema to Mango and its parent company Island. So what we're left with is less abrasive sounds aimed at a northern world music market. Donovan, once a hero of cultural toasting, still sports an edgy delivery, but Jack Ruby's production surprisingly enough smooths it down a bit. The producer does a better job with Foundation, although, unlike Donovan, they are far from militant artists. Neither are Cultural Roots and Identity. All follow in the footsteps of Aswad, who are also showcased here; all three bands excel at roots with the radics removed, lovely, heartfelt vocals, moody music, and rhythms that tend towards the anorexic side of heavy. At least Toots Hibbert can be counted on to deliver up some real soul, but the Junior Delgado track is a disappointment; a light weight reggae pop number. This set is a child of its time. Roots had long ago lost its bite, but now the de rigueur lush arrangements are very much at odds with the dancehall lite beats the producers keep shoving in to make the records sound hip. In the end, however, it just makes everything sound more toothless. Not surprisingly then, the most exciting tracks belong to Arrow, who aren't a reggae band at all, but a successful soca outfit. ~ Jo-Ann Greene, Rovi
