Not illustrated. 1890 Excerpt: ...of Scripture has closed, of the fact that the strongest of men are men who know what shaking and sinking and fearing are, now and then, at any rate. The strongest of men, apart from a firm faith in the Lord God, a firm faith in Jesus Christ, a clear vision of Himself, are as weak as the weakest. They lie down even like Elijah of old, and are tempted to say, " I am spending myself in vain; it is enough: I am not better than my fathers; I wish I were dead." So it is suggested to us that Paul here, as a worker for the Lord, is oppressed, discouraged, feeling overwhelmed and defeated. Now if any working Christian here, especially any Christian minister, if any real live worker for God, who is pushing the Gospel, putting his hands to the Gospel plough, feels weak and discouraged; if the opposition should appear stubborn and nearly triumphant; and if we and our work should appear feckless, it might rally us a little to discover that no affliction has overtaken us but such as is common to men. This has been felt ever since men set themselves to be the servants of God, preachers of righteousness by lip and by life, ordained or unordained, in the face of the world's prevailing and manifold iniquity. "Then spake the Lord, Be not afraid." Paul was spoken to in the vision as being one who was afraid. The vision brings this also to us: that our great Lord and Master knows us and sees us, just then and there, in the midst of all our weakness and discouragement, when we are lying, so to speak, upon our bed, and it is midnight as regards the time of day, and as to the prospect of our work.
