CHAPTER III HERESY There existed, about the time of the building of the new Scotch Church, a society for the distribution of Gospel tracts--promoted by Mr. Henry Drummond, and of course embodying his view of the Gospel--before which Mr. Irving had consented to preach. In his sermon on that occasion, it appears that he had uttered words to the effect that the human nature of our Lord was identical with all human nature. Some rumour of his expressions had reached the ears of a certain Rev. Mr. Cole, a clergyman of the Church of England, who, if we may judge from his controversial writings, was one of the class of well-meaning but fussy and self-constituted champions of what they conceive to be the orthodox belief.1 Filled with alarm, this zealous divine resolved to 1 To show the point of view of the Rev. Mr. Cole as a theologian (who, it appears, was of Clare College, Cambridge, and afterwards a Doctor of Divinity), we may say that he is the author of a pamphlet in the form of a letter addressed to the Rev. It was Dr. Cole's refutation from the Hebrew Scriptures of Sedgwick's teaching of the science of geology. In that brochure he speaks of geology, as taught by the Cambridge professor, as "a Scripture-prostrating and Revelationsubverting philosophy;" and declares his belief that the pages he had written will for ever settle the question of the relations of Scriptare and Geology.
