Today he is mostly remembered as aguerilla fighter: a feared opponent of colonial forces with a price on his head. Throughout his adult life he sought to redeem his people and the land. He founded the Ringatu church which continues to the present. After the wars of the 1860s and early 1870s he was committed to the cause of peace and to working through law.
