Ben Robertson's Red Hills and Cotton (1942) is a narrative memoir which reveals the numerous themes prevalent in both South Carolina and Southern history. Some of these themes include the love of freedom, cotton, and the land; southern honor; loyalty to the Democratic party and Jeffersonian ideals; devotion to the Baptist church; and the differences between the upcountry and lowcountry in the Palmetto State. Robertson also describes Southerners' tendency for conservatism as well as their reverence for the past. This book made me think of another classic of southern history: W.J. Cash's 1941 classic The Mind of the South. Though somewhat dated, Red Hills and Cotton is ideal for those who seek to understand the South and South Carolina. Highly recommended.
