Lt. Col. Jefferson shares his experience as Tuskegee airman starting with his days as an aviation cadet and finally to a fighter squadron equipped with P40 fighters. His squadron was a ground support unit with plenty of missions but little opportunity for air combat (fighter v. fighter). That changed when they were reequipped with P51 Mustangs. He flew plenty of bomber escort missions but ironically his plane was shot down while he was engaged in a strafing run. As the Tail End Charlie of his squadron, the Germans were ready for him and blasted his Mustang out of the sky. Jefferson pulls up and bails, surviving his jump to become a kriege (GI slang for PoW).
At camp no one thinks much of him and some of the PoW interred for a long time were skeptical ("We have black fighter pilots?") until some new PoWs arrived. Among them was a bomber white crewman who spotted Jefferson, ran up and embraced him. "You're a Redtail! A Goddamn Redtail! If you guys were with us, we'd never would have been shot down." After that Jefferson's credibility was beyond doubt.
Upon liberation and return to the U. S., it was back to the same old racism as a white NCO greeted the officers with, "White officers to the right, n*******s to the left!"
Anyone interested in WW II aviation, the Redtails and the PoW experience will find Lt. Col. Jefferson's book an interesting read. Thank you Col. Jefferson.
