Originally published in 1911, this is a fascinating novel of the period and still an interesting read today. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900's and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. This book is a well-written memoir of a woman who resided in Richmond during the civil war, married the man who was the secretary to Confederate President Jefferson Davis and established a comfortable life in New York for the latter half of the 19th Century.
Constance Cary Harrison was a talented writer who penned serveral books and plays and her "Recollections" vibrantly recreate her late teen years when fighting was nearby and supplies became scarce in Richmond.
The latter part of the book reflects their lives in New York where he was a successful lawyer and she was an author who was also involved in several charitable causes. They lived in the Gramercy Park area and their summer home was in Bar Harbor, Maine.
