They are a diverse group indeed, ranging from the 16th century to the present, and they come off as something of a miscellany. Many of the individual items, however, are of great interest. The program includes not only Barbara Strozzi but her less often recorded Renaissance predecessor Maddalena Casulana, an associate of Isabella de' Medici. These works are arranged for string orchestra; the Strozzi madrigal Lagrime mie is the sole work with vocals. Some may want the album for the little-heard Casulana alone.
