In 1975, the Orchestre de Paris still retained the qualities that made it French -- the sweet but tart strings, the piquant and pungent winds, the suave but forceful brass -- and the playing sounds like no others. Martinon, after years abroad, was back in France, and his conducting is both refined and passionate, illuminating Ravel's luminous textures as well as clarifying Ravel's colorful orchestrations.
