This was a wonderful and riveting book. The author makes you feel that you are standing in the scene unfolding before you with vivid details and palpable fears and passions. Maria is at first a wide eyed adorer of her father, but soon discovers that he is all he purports to be, and that includes the unsavory aspects of his character. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys historical fiction and seeing a prominent name from Russian history truly come to life.
