One purpose of this work was to say something about Rand and its work from the vantage point of a twenty-five year perspective. Another purpose was to report on Rand's then current activities. That report appears in Parts 3 through 6 of this volume. Rand was concieved in the mid-1940's as a way to continue the partnership between the nation's military and scientists who had contributed so much to ending the Second World War. Rand was incorporated in 1948 with funding from the Ford Foundation. An early effort was Air Force Project RAND which because the key foundational contract and has continued uninterruptedly to the date of publication (and beyond).
