This book deals with a geographic area that generally has been underserved in historical railroad surveys. It is built around an incredible assortment of historical photos that not only depict railroad scenes in the area, but transit as well, especially with regard to trolley operations in certain communities. I've not seen such a complete photo compilation regarding this area in my previous reading. Captioning also appears to be accurate, and the lengthy photo captions are quite informative. The book is divided into sections dealing with individual communities along the California Central Coast, and most of the text consists of photo captions. Therefore, there's not a strong sense of narrative or chronology. Nevertheless, if it's rare photos you're interested in, you'll be pleased with this book.
