Railroad Ferries of the Hudson and Stories of a Deckhand is a Jem of a book! This is the kind of book that evokes a time and place so completely that you are left feeling that you were there! It is, as so many of the very best non-fiction books are, a detailed primer of the operators (in this case Railroads) and the objects (the vessels of their fleets -(beautiful old wooden double-ender ferries). The work is peppered with great black and white photos, some plans, tables with pertinent builder information and a healthy quantity of masterfully written text. The second section takes the information you have just learned and humanizes it with the memoirs? and memories of people who were actually associated with the job of ferrying commuters between New Jersey and Manhattan during the "Golden Age" of American Travel (1920s-1960s).
The Six "Railroad Navies" of the Hudson River (Pennsylvania, New York Central, Erie, Lackawannah, Central of New Jersey and Public Service...an Upper Hudson Street Railway) are profiled in great depth.
