Somehow one does not think of Detroit, despite the fact that contemporary newspaper accounts confirm that Detroit had several brass bands as early as the mid-1880s. The River Raisin Ragtime Revue, which is based in Detroit, performs 19 selections from composers who were part of the Detroit music scene. Best known among the compositions are "Creole Belles," "Dill Pickles," and "Black and White Rag," but it is a sure bet that such numbers as "Ma Ragtime Baby," "Silks and Rags," "Honey When It's Sunny," and "A Cyclone in Darktown" have rarely been performed since the ragtime era. The River Raisin Ragtime Revue, co-led by William Hayes and William Pemberton, is comprised of five horns, a string quartet, piano, tuba, and drums. They sound very much like a ragtime ensemble circa 1910, performing the ancient and obscure music flawlessly. Three selections are from much more recent times with William Hayes contributing "Grampa's Rag" and a pair of William Bolcom compositions from 1969 ("Old Adam" and "Through Eden's Gates") being taken as piano solos by Rich Ridenour.
