This week, while on vacation, I finished this book. It is one of those books which I was sorry to read the final sentence and close the cover because I so enjoyed the experience of being pulled into its spell. This was, by far, the best book I have read in a long, long time. As I read these stark anecdotes from the life of this servant of God, I cried, I laughed out loud, and I consistently got goosebumps.
Mr. Wangerin is one of those gifted writers who thinks and sees word pictures and can clearly convey them to the rest of us so that we see what he sees. The stories are very real and transparent and sometimes crude in their honesty. This is the kind of book that I will read again. And this is the kind of book that makes me want to write.
All that being said, I hesitate highly recommending it to everyone because I?m not sure everyone is ready for the stark reality exploding from between its covers. But if you?re longing after a book that defies the published norm, this book is for you. Be warned though, for its author will take you to places he has been that may make you uncomfortable. But that?s exactly what I needed. And so I am so grateful to have read this book at this season in my life.
